South Durham Gymnastics takes the health, safety and welfare of every visitor and participant extremely seriously. Our policies & procedures are in place to protect staff members as well as centre users. Copies of the Club’s policies & procedures can also be obtained from the gym’s office upon request.

As a high-performance gymnastics centre, South Durham Gymnastics are dedicated to providing a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for all. Children of all abilities are welcomed to join our sessions, and we will strive to make any necessary reasonable adjustments.
As part of our commitment to safety, we strictly follow the guidelines set by our national governing body, the Independent Gymnastics Association (IGA), to ensure the health and wellbeing of every participant.
Some medical conditions, as listed below, may require additional medical screening or advice before participation:
- Pregnancy
- Detached Retina
- Down’s Syndrome or Confirmed Atlanto Axial Instability (AAI)
- Rodded Back
- Brittle Bones
- Dwarfism
Please be aware that this is not an exhaustive list, and there may be other medical conditions that could contraindicate participation. Participants with Down Syndrome
For the safety of all our gymnasts, children and members with Down Syndrome are required to undergo a medical screening for Atlanto-Axial Instability (AAI)—a condition that can affect the stability of the upper spine. This screening follows IGA guidelines and helps us ensure that every child can enjoy gymnastics safely.
If your child has Down Syndrome, we kindly ask that you download the AAI Screening Form from the IGA website and have it completed by a qualified medical professional before they join our sessions. You can find the form and more details here:

Participants with Dwarfism
It is recommended that coaches and participants with dwarfism are aware of the risks associated with gymnastics participation. Additionally, individuals with dwarfism should avoid activities that involve high impact.
